3 Untitled Pieces by Chris Garcia

Art Techniques: 2-D combined media using various upcycled found materials

Artist Statement

In the past ten years, I’ve been donating art pieces for the “Postcards From the Edge” fundraising auction in NYC. The exhibit raises funds for artists living with HIV and AIDS, and it brings general awareness to the “Visual AIDS” art movement. When I was originally making my “postcard-sized” artwork for the exhibition, I made five pieces to be considered for one donation. After making five, I found one piece that I thought “fit the call.” But it didn’t stop there. Five, turned to eighteen, which led to more and more. So, I decided to create one mosaic tile work and then several more with varying designs. I can create aspects of one 24″ x 18″ wall piece in multiple locations and at different times with a variety of traditional and nontraditional combined media materials. The elements of the panels can always be reworked and reassembled as I complete the artwork.
