Shift Change by Dana Hangle

Shift change is sacred
It is not to be disturbed
under any circumstances
Mania, pain, open wounds,
strokes, labour, heart attack, or death

Do not press the call button
or commit an act of mutiny,
feminist solidarity with roommates
against decency denied

Shift change is sacred
Beware the stout head nurse
Tell your bladder and your bowels
Do not pull the fire alarm
Shit the bed

Dana Hangle (she/her) is a disabled poet and artist living on the unceded territory of the St’át’imc People (Lillooet, B.C., Canada).
